In today’s episode of Orientis Podcast, we are honoured to have Mr Walter van Hattum, the Head of the trade and economic section of the EU office in Hong Kong and Macau. As an expert in trade affairs, he will share his valuable experiences in negotiating trade deals around the world. More importantly, he will disclose some of his insights about the global economic position of Hong Kong. In addition, he'd also share some insights as to how the EU’s green industry development and the digital transformation maybe of benefit to Hong Kong investors.

In our first segment, we’re honoured to have Mr. van Hattum to talk about his career in engaging in international trade negotiations and how Hong Kong is different from his past assignments as an EU official. Moreover, Mr. Hattum shared his enthusiasm for Asian culture due to his unique experiences in childhood. Lastly, Mr. Hattum also revealed the mentality and quality required to be a successful negotiator.

In the second segment, we discussed the response of the EU toward the financial crisis including the adaptation of new measures in terms of fiscal policies, such as the impact of issuing green bonds. Mr. van Hattum also talked about the areas that the NGEU would focus on in the future, such as the digital transformation and explained the reasons for the change of mentality of Europeans toward technology.

We will continue to discuss the green bonds and the importance of European green deals to the EU and to the world. Mr. van Hattum also talked about the investment that the EU is looking into is not only in the energy sector but also expanded to sectors like agriculture and carbon taxation. Moreover, Mr. van Hattum also explained how investors from Hong Kong or Asia can benefit from embracing the EU standards in green industry and the importance of sustainability in business. Lastly, we also talked about the future of the European market in the digital industry.

In the fourth segment, Mr. van Hattum shared his viewpoint on the European Commission pausing the comprehensive agreement on investment with China which was supposed to be consolidated in 2020. Mr. van Hattum also introduced the procedures in trade negotiations. Moreover, Mr. van Hattum has also explained why the EU no longer does deals if the deals do not include green elements such as the Paris Agreement. Lastly, we also talked about the relationship between China and the EU.
在第四部分，Walter 分享了他對歐盟委員會暫停本應在2020年與中國的全面投資協議(CAI)的看法。Walter 還介紹了貿易談判的程序。此外，Walter亦解釋為甚麼歐盟不再與沒有《巴黎協定》等要素的協議進行交易。最後，我們談到了中歐關係。
